The term "classical music" did not appear until the early 19th century, in an attempt to "canonize" the period from Johann Sebastian Bach to Beethoven as a golden age. As a classical music composer, I enrich my work by often making use of folk music, of particularly Ghana (music created by musicians who are commonly not classically trained, often from a purely oral tradition). I follow the examples of composers, such as Dvořák and Smetana, who have used folk themes to impart a nationalist flavor to their work, while others (like Bartók) have used specific themes lifted whole from their folk-music origins.
