I was approached by my sister who is organist in Wigtown Parish Church to write a piece for performance as part of a memorial service for the Wigtown Martyrs. This was to take the form of a duet for soprano and alto voices with piano accompaniment, using the words of psalm 25. The martyrs were two young Scottish Covenanter girls who were chained to stakes in 1685 in the Solway Firth for refusing to acknowledge King James as head of the church. The girls reputedly sang psalm 25 until they drowned in the rising waters. My setting is for two solo female voices (SA) with piano accompaniment, but there is no reason why it should not be performed by a female choir.
