On the night of July 2nd 1863, Confederate General James Longstreet rode alone on horseback in front of his line of men. In spite of arguments with his commanding officer Robert E. Lee, it was his duty to order a suicidal charge the following morning. Like a character in a Greek tragedy, Longstreet could see the profound tragedy about to unfold but was powerless to change it. Perhaps as he continued his ride, he could hear the distant march of heroism that beat in the hearts of a thousand brave soldiers, but it was an empty heroism that launched men to pointless death and unnecessary bloodshed.
