Venice, january 1883. Richard Wagner is old and seek (in fact, he's dying). His best friend, Franz Liszt, is at the piano improvises a sombre melody, almost atonal, which slowly falls into the lower range of the piano, and finally dies as a "ppp" left-hand tremolo. A most striking and disturbing elegy, and a true masterpiece. I'm glad to make it available to string quartet players.
