This splendid motet by Andrea Gabrieli, from his Sacrae Cantiones of 1565, is unusual in being a setting of an entire psalm: Psalm CXX (121 in Anglican/Protestant Psalter). Although Psalm-Motets were increasingly often composed after the introduction of the form by Josquin des Pres, the commonest were of course settings of the Penitential Psalms - as indeed set by Gabrieli. This setting for SATTB is in three partes, of which the second drops the Cantus; it has a total duration of almost 8 minutes.
