Rochdale is one of the many towns in the north west of England which grew up rapidly and flourished for several generations as the scene of frantic experiment and growth during the 'industrial revolution' of western Europe. The Esplanade is where the still very imposing Victorian Town Hall looks across parkland to the narrow, winding River Roch, which give Rochdale its name. Toad Lane, a few hundred yards away to the north east beyond the modern shopping centres, is the site of a Heritage Centre recalling the days of the "pioneers", who began the Co-operative Movement here over a hundred years ago.
