La retour means "the return" in French. The title is given for two reasons: (1) this piece depicts a journey home after a long absence, and (2) a returning melodic theme and countermelody are presented in many variations.
This original piece was composed for students at Kanab Middle School to help them explore theme and variation form, as well as to review the various concepts they study during their second year. Careful editing and attention to young string players' ablilties and interests set students up to succeed with this musical journey.
