It's a chord progression, of which several were very popular in the 18th century, and I present it in its unadorned entirety at the beginning of the piece. After that come 14 variations and I didn't skimp on the schmaltz!
The recorder orchestra here consists of 1 sopranino recorder, two sopranos (descants), three altos (trebles), three tenors, one bass, one great bass in C and one contrabass in F.
