The fourth sonnet opens with the solo tenor and the other men in the Temple marvelling at the wisdom of the young Jesus. Again the prime motive from the opening movement wanders in and out of the text: in the first phrase, then reappearing with the Soprano/Baritone duet, and finally in the last 8 bars, where the chorus restates the theme in its entirety (handed off from the Sopranos to the Basses.)Throughout the seven sonnets, I often employ what I call "hidden polyphony": the sound is homophonic, for the sake of clarity of the text, but the vocal parts are still moving vertically, each voice with a unique melodic line. The accompanying MP3 is performed by Circle Singers www.circlesingers.org (I sing the baritone solo here, though I usually sing tenor.)
