This piece was originally written in 1999 for the treble section of the Wesley Foundation choir at Illinois State University. Although the piece sounds joyous, I was in much spiritual pain at the time and the text of the Kyrie resonated with me. By setting "Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy" with the music written, I tried to write the hope for which I was praying to God. This setting was written for the Chapel Choir at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston and first offered in the fall of 2003.
