Edwin Sung’s "Kinvara" is a mixture of Irish jigs and reels: A reel is notated in simple meter, and comprises largely of quaver moment with an accent on the first and third beats, while a jig is notated in (duple or quadruple) compound meter, with triplets being the main element of this style.
"Kinvara" roughly expresses the town of Kinvara, a coastal town in west Ireland, musically. This includes an Irishman playing a reel with his fiddle outside a bar, the sea waves hitting the shore and the locals speaking Irish Gaelic.
This music was written just after Edwin’s trip to Ireland in March 2013 where he witnessed the Coole Music Youth Orchestra, under the baton of Katharina Baker, performing his music "It Will Turn Into Memories" which he composed at the age of 16. He was then brought to Kinvara, a coastal town in West Ireland, where he was inspired to write a music dedicated to it, and hence the name "Kinvara".
This piece is also a dedication to his girlfriend (now fiancée) Katy to celebrate their 3-year-relationship anniversary, which is a day after St. Patrick’s Day 2014.
