Scottish singer, song-writer and comedian Harry Lauder was the highest-paid performer in the world, and was the first British artist to sell a million records. After his son, John, was killed in the first world war in December 1916 on the Western Front, Harry Lauder wrote the song "Keep Right on to the The End of the Road" in collaboration with the American William Dillon. Then he went on to raise vast amounts of money for the war effort during the First World War, for which he was knighted in 1919.
The song’s chorus lyrics are:
“Keep right on to the end of the road,
Keep right on to the end,
Tho' the way be long, let your heart be strong,
Keep right on round the bend.
Tho' you're tired and weary still journey on,
Till you come to your happy abode,
Where all the love you've been dreaming of
Will be there at the end of the road.”
