This is an arrangement for pipes and band of the well known song commemorating the ignominious flight of General Sir John Cope from the field of battle at Prestonpans in 1745 after being soundly routed by the army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart. The original words to the song were written by Adam Skirving, a local farmer and can be found at www.exclassics.org/ballads/jcope.htm . This particular setting of the pipe tune, and the band accompaniment, attempts to capture the pawky humour of the original song. While the tune is set as a quick march here, it gains a great deal of swagger by being taken more slowly than is the norm – I think about 84 bpm is about optimal. On the playback score, the arrangement ends at the Dal Segno, the full piece can be heard in the MIDI file. It was first played in public at the Ystad Tattoo in Sweden in August 2001.
