It was written by James Lord Pierpoint (1822–1893) and published under the title One Horse Open Sleigh in the autumn of 1857. Even though it is commonly thought of as a Christmas song, it was actually written and sung for Thanksgiving. It was mistakenly branded as a Christmas song because being extremely popular at Thanksgiving, it was sung again around Christmas’.
Although I’m not especially into Christmas festivities as such, having made a couple of other seasonal arrangements, it seemed only right to provide one for Jingle Bells, especially as there is no issue with regards copyright.
As before, I have included a number of versions for various instrumental combinations, and all of which are slightly different, both to accommodate the different number of performers involved, or the ranges of the instruments used.
If you’d like a specific part for any other instrument, just let me know and I’ll be happy to oblige, if possible!
STOP PRESS: Following a request from Karyn Weber, founder of Clarinet Fusion - a Clarinet Choir from the San Francisco Bay Area - I have now added two independent parts for Contra Alto Clarinet in Eb, and Contrabass Clarinet in Bb - which their contra player, Mark Horne, has kindly produced and edited.
