This is an arrangement of the accompaniment to the hymn tune Noel, which is normally used for the carol It came upon the Midnight Clear. Verses 1-3 should be accompanied on the organ, using Sullivan’s harmonisation (as found in most hymn and carol books). This arrangement gives an introduction for violin trio and bass. The introduction comes again as a link between the third and fourth verses, and there are violin parts for the fourth verse. The third violin could be adapted for viola if necessary. The bass part could be played on strings only (cello with or without double bass), but should preferably also have the organist realising the figures. This arrangement may be a symptom of over-exposure to Bach violin music.
