These settings were composed somewhat under the influence of Gustav Holst's beautiful 4 Songs for Voice and Violin. However, in this piece the violin is an equal soloist with the singer, with a fairly virtuosic part. 'Invocations' was dedicated to Sir Michael Tippett, and first performed by Jackie Horner (soprano) and Rick Koster (violin) at St. James' church. Clerkenwell, London, in 1988.
