Come, ye thankful people, come is a well-loved Harvest Thanksgiving hymn, though the words also point towards Advent. Sir George Job Elvey (1816-1893) was one of my predecessors at Windsor, so this arrangement is careful to respect conventional harmony whilst still providing interest, excitement and colour. The introduction and second verse explore enriched harmonies and passing tones. The Faux Bourdon of the third verse may be sung unaccompanied by the choir or the melody in the tenor line soloed out on a strong reed stop. After an optional interlude and modulation the final verse has a soaring descant and interesting pedal line.
