A colourful organ introduction for ’Hark! the herald angels sing’, the contrasts between manuals and key changes add excitement. It is equally effective on a modest-sized organ (by playing the solo reed sections on a Great reed) as on a larger instrument. The penultimate phrase quotes 'Once in royal David's city', which traditionally opens a Lessons and Carols service and 'Hark the herald' concludes the service. If preferred the usual phrase from Mendelssohn may be substituted.
