Still, it is a fun exercise in fugal writing for four parts. The original theme is taken from an extraordinary work by Marin Marias titled ’Apotheosis on the operation to remove gallstones’, a luridly detailed musical account of the extremely dangerous operation, scored for narrator, viola da gamba and continuo. The fugue subject is taken from the final section where the long-suffering patient is rejoicing after a no doubt rare success to remove those pesky gallstones.
