O God, our help in ages past has long associations with Remembrance Sunday/Armistice Day and other commemorative occasions. This setting was first used for a college Sesquicentennial anniversary in which a new chapel organ was opened. The descant for verse three, either sung or played by a solo trumpet, is supported by a free harmonization, leading to a very full and rich SATB setting for verse four, unaccompanied except for organ punctuations. The final verse is treated with another effective descant and free harmonization. Upon request accompaniment scored for 5-part brass and organ is available. A more extensive instrumental accompaniment of 8-part brass, tympani, and organ, as featured on the recording "To Sing with Heart and Voice" from Holy Trinity Garrison Church, Windsor, is also available.
