This quartet was first performed by students in a concert at the Birmingham School of Music. It has also been performed at the Buxton Festival. The composer has chosen not to give performance instructions as he feels that the movement titles suggest how they should be performed - March Winds are pretty windy, and April Showers drip down right to the last drop. He remembers village children dancing round a tall Maypole in May, weaving patterns with long coloured ribbons. Their dancing could be a little clumsy, hence the "lop-sided" seven eight time signature!
