This was originally the second movement of a "Symphony-Suite", an experiment in stylistic regression, in which it is preceded by a symphonic allegro in sonata form, and followed by a slow movement and a movement which is in itself virtually a suite of short dance movements (formally modelled on the finale of JSB’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1). The intermezzo is not only the best movement, but also the one which most satisfactorily stands on its own. At this stage, the spirit of Brahms is present, to the extent that a quotation from one of his intermezzos for piano makes a couple of appearances.
