This is a one-off experiment in writing a straightforward jazz piece, as opposed to the hybrid nature of most of my music, where baroque structures are infused with jazz elements. It is based on two alternating chords in the dorian mode. Contrasting sections of octatonic (diminished) harmony provide relief from the plain dorian sound. The melody of bars 24 - 39 is simply a written-out improvisation, and may be embellished or changed completely at the performer’s discretion. Alternatively, being notated in 12/8 time, it can be played as written by classical pianists.
