In Memory was written after a friend passed away.

Uses: memorial services, funerals, communion of saints

This is a song about love within the context of loss.

Too few modern hymns address the needs of bereaved congregations, in particular for emotional honesty. This piece attempts to offer worshippers emotional, theological and biblical material to reflect upon whilst avoiding mawkishness.

The song begins expressing our subjective experience of grief at the loss of people we loved. In Stanza 1 Psalm 130 is briefly alluded to. Stanza 2 relates to our human need to remember and review meaning.

The song’s range expands to address • the wider communion of saints, • the death and resurrection of Christ, Stanza 4 alluding to 1John 4, and • the final vision of reunion in God, stanza 5 being drawn from Isaiah 25:6-9.

The vocal range (bottom A to top E) is slightly wider than usual for a congregational hymn and includes an octave interval, but is within the range of some classic hymns. Written in the key of E some may wish to transpose this piece to the key of D.
