Additional instrumental parts are included as optional extras. In setting the poem for a Remembrance Service, I decided I wasn’t comfortable to include the line ‘Take up our quarrel with the foe’ – although I appreciate ‘the foe’ could be reinterpreted to not mean going out to kill the enemy. However, that was John McCrae’s intended meaning and for me, one of the essences of Remembrance is to recall the horrors of war and resolve to do all we can to avert hostilities in the future. Thankfully, John McCrae’s original handwritten version has led to ambiguity about whether the first line is 'In Flanders fields the poppies blow' or 'In Flanders fields the poppies grow'. McCrae used either word when making handwritten copies for friends and family.
