It was first written in 1982/83 with minor revisions being made in 2011.
The first setting is from The Song of Hiawatha by Longfellow: As Unto the Bow.. and states how man and woman are essential to one another, just as the bow is to the cord.
The second setting is from William Blake: Never Seek to Tell Thy Love. This describes the feeling when the lover is taken away, presumably by death.
The next two songs set words by Janet Dedman, the composer’s ex-wife. On Reading ‘Children’s Letters to God’ imagines a child writing to God that she will fight for good and justice; whereas Loving Life is a statement of faith, that God is always present throughout all life’s events.
The final song sets words by St. John of the Cross: The Capsule of Perfection which states how our Maker, the lover, will always be remembered.
