This little gem is one of my favourites. Just 7 bars long, it was easily memorised by the youngsters, who could then play it with separate bows, or with slurs. They also learned to play it, by ear, beginning on open strings, in keys D and A, as well as in C, beginning on 'G3'. It provides a convenient alternative to scale playing at the beginning of rehearsal, while being a miniature musical masterpiece. It also provides an inbuilt lesson in dynamic shading (cresc. on rising lines, and dim. on descending lines)
