Some times when I write a song I think of a particular composer, its only when the song is written this happens, I dont start intentionally trying to write in the style of that composer but when Ive finished it the composer or a lyricist comes to mind. So I have Burton Lane, Johnny Mercer, Jerome Kern and Henry Mancini songs in my mind, its not that the songs are remotely like them in any way but for some reason these creators always come to mind. Who knows, maybe when Im writing a song Richard Rogers comes down and peeps over my shoulder out of curiosity and I think of him whenever I hear it.
Anyway, this reminds me of Hoagy Carmicheal s song Heart and soul I think because in this case it uses the circle of fifths which is the ladder of harmony that he uses so well in the middle eight of his song. Who can say, maybe Hoagy sneaked a peek when I was writing it.
In the words of an old Tin Pan Alley song there is a philosophy worthy of Shakespeare or the bible:
lifes too mysterious, dont take it serious
