This one proved easily the most popular of the series. Consequently, when musicians talk of Dvorak’s Humoresque, they do not feel the need to specify – in the absence of any information to the contrary, the assumption is that number 7 is the one they mean!
The piece has been re-arranged for numerous instrumental combinations - including this version for mixed woodwind trio of 2 clarinets and bassoon. Lyrics have also been set to the melody – some serious, others less so. Americans of a certain age will associate the tune with a song inspired by a railway sign: ‘Passengers will please refrain from flushing toilets while the train is standing still within the station house’. The notorious gangster Al Capone apparently also added lyrics to the tune while imprisoned in Alcatraz.
