The listener is in the center of the city and hears the procession approaching. As the music grows louder and more intense, the listener comes face to face with the crowds around Jesus. After the close encounter with crowd, Jesus and His followers move on down the street, leaving the listener as an eyewitness to the event we now know and celebrate as Palm Sunday. To me, Palm Sunday is an exciting event, stirring the crowds with enthusiasm as they greet Jesus in His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. But the event is unresolved because Jesus is not the political King for whom they were seeking. When I wrote the anthem, I left many of the chords unresolved, giving the feeling of anticipation, yet not experiencing the resolution of that feeling. The anthem finally resolves in a quiet major chord as the crowds have moved away from the listener.
