This Responsorium for the Feast of the Nativity (Christmas) is from Munich Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (D-Mbs) Mus. ms. 28, where the piece is anonymous. Peter Bergquist has attributed the piece to Lassus in Vol. 24 of the new complete edition and the attribution is generally accepted.

The Responsory is in the customary form, with two verses and a Repetendum. There is no reference to the chant of the Responsory. The first Verse is Gloria in excelsis… From bar 42 onwards, i.e. from the first Verse, the scoring is for SSSA - the second soprano can well be sung by altos, the Altus by Tenors.

The cleffing is 'normal' or 'low', i.e. using SATB clefs, and the piece is here presented without transposition. It can of course be transposed if required: transposed copies are available from us on request.

Today the King of Heaven has deigned to be born for us of the Virgin, that he might call lost Man to the Kingdom of Heaven. Let the Angel Hoist rejoice, for eternal Salvation has appeared to Mankind. Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to people of goodwill. Glory be to the Father…
