1. Yesterday the summer night, which was lending us its veils, Was worthy of you, so many stars it had! So fresh was its calm! so sweet was its breath! So much loving dew it was spilling On the flowers and on us!
2. Me, I was in front of you, full of joy and fire, As you were looking at me with all your soul, I was admiring the beauty cladding your forehead, And without even a word to reveal your thought, The tender reverie started in your heart In my heart would conclude!
3. For the soul one needs, you see, the marriage of two thoughts, The choked sighs, the hands longly pressed, The kiss, pure fragrance, heady liquor, And all what a look in another look can read, And all the songs of that sweet lyre That we call the heart!
4. There is nothing under the sky that has not its secrete law, Its selected and dear place, its shelter, its retreat, Where thousands deep instincts anchor us night and night; The swans have the lake, the eagles the mountain, The souls have love!
