I believe that the double bass repertoire does not have its fair share of passion… so this light-hearted but challenging quartet sets out to redress the balance.
Imagine an office romance scenario: basses 1 and 2 represent the voice and heart of the office flirt, while basses 3 and 4 represent the voice and heart of her unsuspecting colleague, who is about to fall, hook, line and sinker… Sadly, it all ends in tears for basses 3 & 4. But there are some good tunes on the way! ;)
The parts are split, as in a french horn quartet, in two pairs - basses 1 and 3 have the high parts, mostly in treble clef and the solo range, while basses 2 and 4 have lower parts, mostly in bass clef and the orchestral range.
The work was commissioned in 2009 by Wells Cathedral School to be played by its talented senior bass quartet.
