Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) wrote over 600 songs for voice and piano during his short life. He set this melody to Goethe's poem Heidenroslein, which tells of a young man's rejected love, using a rose to symbolise the object of his desire. Several other composers set the same poem to music, but Schubert's version is undoubtedly the best known.
