Programme note:
Georges Bizet's opera 'Carmen' was first performed in Paris in 1875, but Bizet died that same year before knowing that 'Carmen' would go on to achieve international acclaim.
The Habanera is the popular name for the aria "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" sung by the title character in the first act of the opera.
The Habanera was further popularised in the second of the two Carmen Suites published in 1887, and in 1943 appeared as 'Dat's Love' in the Broadway musical adaptation 'Carmen Jones'.
