Why should saxophone players have all the fun?! Of course, string players deserve their share of fun, too, so I’ve written this swing number for a young string orchestra.
Although the rhythms may look complicated, the notes are all within the grade 1 range. Even some grown up string players are a bit shy when it comes to swing music, but there’s no need to worry - just lengthen the first of each pair of quavers so that you get a "doo-be, doo-be, doo" feel to the music. It really is as simple as that!
When I’m teaching my beginner swing band (full of saxophones and brass) we do a lot of singing or saying the rhythms before we try to play them. You could get your orchestra to sing this whole piece, clicking their fingers on beats 2 & 4 - it would sound great! When vocalising the music, use "doo" for any note that’s on the beat and "be" for any quaver that’s off the beat. And don’t forget to enjoy yourselves! :)
