This tune comes from a London broadsheet of about 1800. "It probably came to England from France, and is found all over Europe" (The New Oxford Book of Carols). Charles Dickens used it in "A Christmas Carol" (1843), when Ebenezer Scrooge, hearing it sung at the keyhole of his office, ‘seized the ruler with such energy of action, that the singer fled in terror’.
