A Tudor alternatim setting of plainsong Mass XI, Orbis factor, as an exercise in recreating a mass setting by a composer of the pre-reformation (setting has been dubbed ’Sheppard’s White Tye’ by those who have sung it). At a practical level the mass has proven successful in performance, both with congeration who have the opportunity to participate in a setting familiar to them, and the choir who get to enjoy the high treble lines, triple-meter finale, false relations, etc, that are the trademark thrills of the era. Please will reviewers excuse a few awkward moments, brought about through the constraints of the cantus firmus plainsong (notably bars 14, 74); better solutions welcomed by Email. The setting complements Mundys’s Orbis Factor Kyrie (TrTrMM) in liturgical use.
