At the Gloria on Holy Thursday and at Easter the priest intones the words 'Gloria in excelsis Deo'. Immediately after this, all the bells in the church are rung for a period during the Gloria.

These organ fanfares are designed to play between the priest's intonation and the start of the next line of text ('et in terra pax…'), during the ringing of the bells. They are each based on one of the plainchant intonations for the Gloria, and the priest should therefore use the same intonation melody.
