John Bacchus Dykes was a prolific writer of hymn tunes. His tune for the words "Praise to the Holiest in the height" appeared in the 1868 Appendix to "Hymns Ancient & Modern". The words are from John Henry Newman's poem "The Dream of Gerontius" (1865) and take their inspiration from 1 Corinthians 15: 20-47 in which God, the second Adam, restores the world which had been lost by the sin of the first Adam. Gerontius is the old man whose soul crosses the threshold of death into Purgatory.
