He was an organ scholar at Caius College, Cambridge, and later became a schoolmaster and schools inspector. Shaw composed a variety of works, including choral pieces, anthems, hymn tunes, and arrangements. He was awarded the Lambeth degree of Doctor of Music and worked closely with his brother, Martin Shaw, who was also a composer.
The text of this carol was written by Frances Chesterton, the wife of the famous writer G.K. Chesterton. The carol is set to the traditional English tune "Stowey" and is known for its gentle and reflective melody. It has been published in several hymnals and is often performed during the Christmas season.
