Jean-Marie Leclair was born in Lyons in 1697 and murdered practically on his own doorstep in Paris in 1764 by an unknown person and for no apparent reason, though his wife is suspected of having been responsible. He studied violin in Italy with Corelli�s and Vivaldi�s pupil, Giovanni Battista Somis and was a great admirer of Locatelli, making the journey from Paris to Amsterdam when he was well over sixty in order to hear the renowned Italian violinist. This sonata was printed in 1730, in an edition engraved by Mlle Louise Roussel and was re-issued later, when she had become his wife. I made this arrangement from the Sonata for violin duet.
