The words of this magnificent hymn were written by Edward Burns (b.1938) and are copyright. Accordingly, this score shows the melody line of the descant without the words underneath. This hymn tune appeared in William Gardiner's "Sacred Melodies" (1815), a collection containing adaptations of melodies by such composers as Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. It was given there as "from Beethoven", but Gardiner could never remember just where he found it. No-one since has been able to identify its source and the tune is usually thought of as being by Gardiner himself.
