But alas, I do feel compelled to tell you more. The first three measures were running through my head, over and over and over, during my work on the string quartet last year. (The subject of the fug comes the cello part somewhere in the development of the quartet.) There was no escape but to write it down and turn it into its own piece. It’s called “Fug” instead of “Fugue”, because I don’t want anyone thinking that I believe I’ve constructed an official rule-following fugue. For the same reason, I play golf with pink golf balls.
