As so often happens, people who follow what they hear into composition can end up in places that baffle their nearest and dearest. Most of what I've written has had just this effect on on my dear friend Raymond Lukens, a very great artist in his own right, and a staunch admirer of forthright melody. I have sought for some time to come up with some music that is true to what I hear, yet would communicate to him. This piece is my latest attempt.
Withal, it is dedicated to my father, on his ninetieth birthday. My search for a sweeter idiom led my to the French melodic style my Dad adores, so this one is for him!
Humble thanks to the great musician Barry Booth for his encouragement. Barry's kind words about an earlier draft sounded in my ear like having St. Thomas Aquinas tell you your theology is coming along nicely! Thanks to my revered friends Tania Gill and Jake Oelrichs, who recorded a sublime rendition of the tune I hope to post shortly.
