About the Composer
François-Auguste Gevaert (1828–1908) was a prominent Belgian musicologist and composer. Born in Huise, near Oudenaarde, Gevaert studied music at the Ghent Conservatory under Édouard de Sommere and Martin-Joseph Mengal. His compositions earned him the Belgian Prix de Rome, which allowed him to travel to Spain and Italy. Gevaert served as Chef de Chant at the Academie de Musique in Paris and later became the head of the Brussels Conservatoire. Although his music is not widely known today, Gevaert's impact as a teacher, historian, and lecturer remains significant.
