Francesca is an ode to Frances Lovoy, and represents some aspects of her favorite pieces of music and composers, as well as some of the most memorable musical experiences we have shared. The counterpoint is reminiscent of her favorite Baroque composers, and the accompanying theme is an homage to Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, which was performed at the first concert we attended together. It also contains a secondary melody that was composed in her presence, and prominently features her favorite percussion instrument, the tam-tam. Also the general calmness spiced with occasional passion is reminiscent of Fran’s personality, and the exultant psychology of the work reflects her view of life.
