"Equali" are pieces written for an ensemble of identical instruments. For example, in 1812, Beethoven wrote three equali for four trombones. Since these pieces contain trombones plus a trumpet, they must therefore be "inequali."

The first of the set has been described to me as "Hindemith on dexedrine." It's called "3, 4, 5" because the bass trombone is playing a passacaglia; the two tenor trombones are playing the accompaniment to a melody in 4/4; and the trumpet is playing a melody in 5/4.
