Venantius Fortunatus (c.540-c.600) was a poet working at Poitiers when relics of the Holy Cross were installed at the convent there. For that occasion he wrote two of his best-known hymns - "The royal banners forward go" and "Sing my tongue, the glorious battle". The present hymn, "Welcome, happy morning", was translated by the English parish priest John Ellerton (1826-1893). Sir Arthur Sullivan composed the tune "Fortunatus" for Ellerton's words.
