It talks about a woman called Elisabeth, who - after the World War II is over - is waiting for her husband (a soldier) to come home (so the first part describes an undefinit amount of time)…Someday then, somebody is knocking on her door, so she - recognizing, that it has something to do with her husband - is euphorically running to the door. But there she gets message, that her husband died during doing his duty. Knowing that, play the piece with lots of passion, since it describes the inner motions of a "victim of war".
